Gwent v Glamorgan

County Match Report:  Gwent I v Glamorgan I – Channel League

Newport Golf Club:  Sunday 22nd April 2012

The foursomes matches commenced in warm sunny weather which soon became overcast and accompanied with a cold tricky wind which lasted all day sometimes with rain and occasional hail. The top two games lost their foursomes by small margins and the partnership of Chris Dinsdale and Mitchell Reid turned the tide for Gwent by winning their game against the Glamorgan pair of Chris O’Neil and Ian Flower. Neil Oakley and Jonathan Davidson had a fine 4 & 3 win against Mark Baird and Zach Gould. Richard Tayler and Alistair Mason also won the final foursomes game to give Gwent a 3-2 lead at lunch.

The afternoon singles saw Chris Dinsdale, Joe Vickery, and Rhys Barber winning the top three games to get Gwent away to a great start. Chris Dinsdale’s match with Richard Hooper set up one of the most exciting finishes of the day. Their match was all square after the 15th and Chris birdied the 16th to go 1 up. Richard Hooper sank a putt across the green on 17 to bring the game back all square. Both players were on the 18th green in 2 and it was on Chris to putt first from some distance. He duly holed his putt and Richard Hooper missed his to give Gwent their point.  Luke Thomas of Glamorgan must consider himself most unlucky to lose his match against Joe Vickery as their match was all square going down 17 when Luke’s approach shot to the green from a long way back hit the steps on the side of the green and his ball careered out of bounds leaving him one down with one to play. The 18th was halved in birdie 4’s and Joe took the game 1 Up.

Another fine game was that between Gwent’s Mitchell Reid and Glamorgan’s Zach Gould. This was Zach’s first game for Glamorgan for over a season and the pair were evenly matched. Mitchell finally won the game with a 1 Up win to gain a point for Gwent.

Neil Oakley ground out his game with Mark Baird and won on the 17th hole after ramming a putt into the back of the hole to give Gwent the vital point they needed to win the match by 8 points to 7.

This was an excellent Gwent victory over a strong Glamorgan team.
